NOTE: WE CHOOSE LUIS V. SAENZ AS PERSON OF THE YEAR FOR 2013 FOR MANY REASONS.
THE MAIN REASON IS THE FACT THAT HE INHERITED A COUNTY OFFICE FROM A FORMER DISTRICT ATTORNEY THAT WAS UNDER INDICTMENT FOR VARIOUS CRIMES. THE OFFICE WAS PERCEIVED OF AS A DEN OF THIEVES AND RIDDLED WITH CORRUPTION. IT WAS LOOKED AT AS IN A TOTAL DYSFUNCTIONAL STATE OF AFFAIRS.
WITH VIGOR, HE TOOK ON THE TASK TO CLEAN IT UP. HE MADE IT RESPECTABLE AGAIN. TO DO THIS, HE HAD TO REDUCE THE BLOATED STAFF THAT WAS OVERPAID AND UNDER WORKED.
HE HAS RETAINED AND HIRED CAPABLE EMPLOYEES WHO WANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THE PEOPLE OF CAMERON COUNTY.
MR. SAENZ, HIS STAFF, AND OTHER VALLEY LAW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENTS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO SOMETHING THAT THE PAST ADMINISTRATION WAS UNWILLING, UNABLE OR REFUSED TO DO, AND THAT WAS TO CLEAN UP THE 8-LINER MESS THAT WAS SWALLOWING UP CAMERON COUNTY.
HE KNEW THAT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE GAMBLING CASINOS WERE LINKED TO ORGANIZED CRIME FROM OUT OF STATE, THE MEXICAN CARTELS, LOCAL GANGS, CORRUPT ELECTED OFFICIALS, AND OTHER GREEDY PLAYERS.
MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WERE SPENT BY POOR PEOPLE AND WINTER TEXAS HOPING TO WIN BIG. BUT, THE MACHINES WERE RIGGED TO PAY THE OWNERS AND NOT THE GULLIBLE PATRONS.
LUIS WENT AFTER THEM WITH A VENGEANCE AND MANAGED TO SHUT DOWN 98% OF THE ILLEGAL OPERATIONS IN THE COUNTY IN JUST A FEW MONTHS TIME.
AS AN EXAMPLE, NO LESS THAN 30 ILLEGAL GAMBLING JOINTS WERE OPERATING IN AN AREA SURROUNDING AND JUST OUTSIDE THE CITY OF LA FERIA.
WHEN THE RAIDS STARTED IN THIS AREA THE WORD SPREAD FAST AND YOU COULD SEE THE ESTABLISHMENTS CLOSING DOWN OR COLLAPSING LIKE DOMINOES.
IN AN ATTEMPT TO STAY ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE LAW DOGS, RENTAL TRUCKS COULD BE SEEN BEING LOADED UP WITH THE 8-LINER MACHINES BY THEIR CORRUPT OPERATORS ALL OVER THE AREA.
FOR THESE REASONS AND MANY MORE ACCOMPLISHMENTS, WE SALUTE YOU AND THANK YOU MR. LUIS V. SAENZ!
Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz holds the County's top law enforcement position. He leads a talented and diverse Team that mirrors his goals and beliefs.
The District Attorney's Office has made it their goal to provide the public with the highest form of legal representation to ensure that justice is served in Cameron County.
As one of the largest law firms in the Rio Grande Valley, the district attorney's office is comprised of over 100 employees, which includes 36 attorneys, and 52 support staff and investigators.
With a budget of about six million dollars, the District Attorney's Office meets the numerous challenges presented daily and addresses the never ending flow of cases sent for review and prosecution.
Mr. Saenz's Chief First Assistant District Attorney, Rene Gonzalez, oversees and assists him with ongoing tasks and responsibilities at the office.
The most important division of any District Attorney's office is its Investigations Division. Mr. Saenz has entrusted that position to Chief Investigator George DeLaunay who has many years of quality experience in law enforcement and is a true asset to the DA's office.
Mission Statement:
As the County's top law enforcement official, Mr. Saenz holds true to the office Mission Statement and expects his staff to pursue it as well:
To uphold the laws of the State of Texas, to represent the citizens of this County, to assist the victims of crime to the best of their ability, to hold those responsible for committing crimes, to seek incarceration for those individuals who are corrupt by crime and evil making them a danger to society and to see that Justice is done.
Luis V. Saenz took office January 1, 2013 as Cameron County’s District Attorney for a four-year term.
Saenz served as Assistant District Attorney from 1984-1990 and was promoted First-Chair Prosecutor in just 18 months. He prosecuted cases with only one goal in mind – JUSTICE. He was appointed District Attorney by the Cameron County Commissioners' Court in 1990, elected as District Attorney in1992, appointed as Special Prosecutor in 2005 and appointed Cameron County Magistrate by the Board of Judges in 2005.
Saenz acquired a bachelor's of science degree in education from Texas A&I Kingsville in 1974, served as a Brownsville educator from 1975-1981 and attended The University of Texas Law Schoolfrom 1981-1984 where he passed the bar exam before graduating from law school.
He served on the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees from 1987-1990 and was elected School Board President in 1988 and 1990. He was recognized by the Texas Education Agency for his leadership on the School Board.
Mr. Saenz arrived in Brownsville in December 1974 where he stepped off a bus with nothing more than $20 in his wallet. He held something more valuable – a recently hard-earned degree in education from Texas A & I University in Kingsville. After receiving his first paycheck as a dedicated educator in January 1975, he married his college sweetheart, Delia Gonzalez. They have been married now for 37 years and have two sons.
He is one of six siblings raised by a single parent. As a child, his mother stressed the importance of responsibility, service and education. From kindergarten to senior year in high school, not a day of school was missed.
