An announcement from the jury about Darren Wilson will come any day now — and we are planning protests and actions for that day and the following days. We are asking you to get involved.
ON THE DAY OF IN THE ST LOUIS AREA:
On the day of the announcement, we’re encouraging all community members to do four things:
- Grab your “protest bag.” We are encouraging everyone to pack in advance: the jail support number (314-862-2249) written on your body, a change of warm gloves, hat/scarf/gloves, plastic gallon bags, snack and water, portable phone charger, paper map, medications, shatterproof goggles, list of members of your group’s numbers and birthday, some medical supplies (gauze, tape, Maalox and water, cold pack)
- Connect with your buddy and/or group and pick a meet-up spot. We are encouraging people to go out to protest in formed groups or with a buddy. If you don’t have a buddy, come to a safe space and you can find someone to pair with. Pick an emergency spot to meet up at.
- Head to two spots the night of: Shaw (at Shaw and Klemm) and the lot across from the Ferguson Police Department (on S. Florissant). Look for people with signs/flags to orient you.
- Breathe. We may all be anxious/angry/scared. Take a breath, ground yourself and then spring into action!

Organize a small group with people you trust. Rotate who watches for the grand jury announcement. Only one or two need to stay alert each night. The rest can turn off your brains and rest — you’ll get a call (or a visit if phones stop working) when it comes.
In the street, designate one or two group members to watch twitter and text alerts (text “hands up” to 90975). Ask your family to contact your comms people to get in touch while you’re out. The rest of your group can ignore your phones and focus on the scene around you.
Write down your most important phone numbers. Carry a copy and leave a copy at home or with someone you trust. Prepare for your phone battery to die and for your phone to be broken or stolen.
Pick a point and a back-up point to meet if someone is separated from your small group during the aftermath of the grand jury decision. Stick with a buddy, and know the sanctuary locations (see mcustl.org).
Walk around nearby protest areas and note places to pee, shelter from weather, and escape. Your comms people should bring paper maps. Communications including GPS will probably go down.
Consider using your small group to support the ability of others to stay in the streets as long as they choose. If the grand jury decision comes back on a cold day, distribute warmth! Thrift shop and ask your congregation to donate tons of cheap warm clothes, hats, socks, blankets, and cheap rain gear.
If it rains or gets windy, use safety scissors to cut arm holes and a neck hole in big trash bags. Pass them out as emergency ponchos. People can put smaller plastic bags inside their shoes (outside their socks) to keep their feet dryer and warmer in wet conditions.
Solicit food donations from groceries (particularly high-end grocers like Whole Foods). Arrange a place to store food, a place to prepare large quantities of food, and a way to transport hot food to hot spots in Ferguson, Clayton, or Shaw. Feed the public from a folding table or a truck tailgate. Don’t forget hand sanitizer and trash bags!
Even if you don’t plan to get arrested, make sure everyone in your group knows your legal name, gender, date of birth, and the jail support hotline number: (314) 862-2249. You only need to give police your name, date of birth, and address. Then say the magic words: “I will not talk. I want a lawyer.”
Check-in with your buddy regularly: are you too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, or taking yourself too Seriously (HALTS) to keep going? Do you need to pee or warm up? Before you go to sleep, tell your buddy your low point and high point of the day. For 24-hour confidential peer support, call (513) 931-9276.
Make sure elderly and disabled family members won’t run out of meds if roads close for a few days. Refill your medications. Write down what you take, how much, and how often. Carry a copy of your medical info and give a copy to someone you trust. Have a plan in case home health aides can’t get to disabled family members.
Don’t lie to children about what is happening. Ask them what they know, and nurture their curiosity. Take a moment to explain what is happening to yourself before you try to explain it to them.
Plan to hang out with your small group on the one-month anniversary of the grand jury decision announcement. Dress very warm and wait outside the jail for arrested group members. Go as a group to court with any group members who face charges. Hold each other down — our lives matter!
