HARLINGEN CITY COMMISSIONERS VOTE TO RAISE YOUR REAL ESTATE TAXES!

Notice of Public Hearing on Tax Increase The CITY OF HARLINGEN will hold two public hearings on a proposal to increase total tax revenues from properties on the tax roll in the preceding tax year by 0.073760 percent (percentage by which proposed tax rate exceeds lower of rollback tax rate or effective tax calculated under Chapter 26, Tax Code). Your individual taxes may increase at a greater or lesser rate, or even decrease, depending on the change in the taxable value of your property in relation to the change in taxable value of all other property and the tax rate that is adopted. The first public hearing will be held on August 17, 2011 at 5:30 PM at Town Hall, 118 E. Tyler, Harlingen, Texas.. The second public hearing will be held on August 24, 2011 at 5:30 PM at Town Hall, 118 E. Tyler, Harlingen, Texas. The members of the governing body voted on the proposal to consider the tax increase as follows: FOR: Commissioners: Gustavo C. Ruiz, Robert A. Leftwich, Kori Marra and Jerry Prepejchal AGAINST: ABSENT: Commissioner Joey Trevino The average taxable value of a residence homestead in CITY OF HARLINGEN last year was $86,411. Based on last year's tax rate of $0.588827 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed last year on the average home was $508.81. The average taxable value of a residence homestead in CITY OF HARLINGEN this year is $87,997. If the governing body adopts the effective tax rate for this year of $0.588393 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average home would be $517.77. If the governing body adopts the proposed tax rate of $0.588827 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average home would be $518.15. Members of the public are encouraged to attend the hearings and express their views.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS BUDGET AND PROPOSED TAX RATE The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District will hold a public meeting at 5:30 PM, August 25, 2011 in Administration Bldg.-Board Room, 407 N. 77 Sunshine Strip Harlingen, Texas 78550. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the school district's budget that will determine the tax rate that will be adopted. Public participation in the discussion is invited. The tax rate that is ultimately adopted at this meeting or at a separate meeting at a later date may not exceed the proposed rate shown below unless the district publishes a revised notice containing the same information and comparisons set out below and holds another public meeting to discuss the revised notice. Notice of Rollback Rate: The highest tax rate the district can adopt before requiring voter approval at an election is $1.2208. This election will be automatically held if the district adopts a rate in excess of the rollback rate of $1.2208.
