08/31/13 AP: Suspected US drone kills 3 militants in Pakistan near Afghan border, Pakistani officials say Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected U.S. drone strike has killed at least three militants in a northwestern tribal region near the Afghan border. They say two missiles hit a room of an abandoned seminary in Mussaki village in North Waziristan Saturday. Militants from Turkmenistan were among those at the seminary but the nationality of the dead was not immediately known.

08/31/13 KP: 16 Taliban militants killed, 10 arrested in Wardak province At least 16 Taliban militants were killed or injured following military operations in central Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan, local government officials said. Provincail government media office following a statement confirmed 16 militants were killed in separate incidents across Maidan Wardak province during the past 48 hours, and 10 others were arrested.

08/31/13 NYTimes: U.S. soldiers find surprise on returning to Afghan valley The Americans arrived under cover of night, the static electricity from their helicopter blades casting halos of blue in the pitch black. It was their first return to the Pech Valley — a rugged swath of eastern Afghanistan so violent they nicknamed it the Valley of Death — since the U.S. military abruptly ended an offensive against the Taliban there in 2011 after taking heavy casualties.

08/31/13 KUNA: Roadside bomb kills 12 people in S. Afghanistan - At least twelve people were killed when a vehicle in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan struck a roadside bomb, said officials on Saturday. According to the spokesman of the governor Omar Zwak, the explosion occurred in the Garmaw area of Sangin district of Helmand late on Friday night killing at least twelve civilians including a woman.

08/31/13 ibtimes: Australian Soldier 'Cut Hand Off' Dead Afghan Taliban An Australian special forces soldier is under investigation for cutting off the hand of a dead Taliban soldier in a raid in Afghanistan earlier this year. According to a statement issued by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) on Friday, the Special Operations Task Force and Afghan National Security Forces were dispatched on a raid targeting "an insurgent commander" operating in Uruzgan province.

08/30/13 DoD: Army Casualties Identified Staff Sgt. Michael H. Ollis, 24, of Staten Island, N.Y., died Aug. 28, in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, small arms and indirect fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, N.Y.

08/30/13 DoD: Army Casualty Identified Sgt. 1st Class Ricardo D. Young, 34, of Rosston, Ark., died Aug. 28, in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 307th Engineer Battalion (Combat/Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C.

08/30/13 AP: Suicide attacker kills Afghan official, 7 others A police spokesman says the death toll in a suicide bombing in northern Afghanistan has reached eight, including an Afghan official who was the apparent target. Police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini said another 11 people were wounded in Friday morning's attack in the Dashi Archi district of Kunduz province. The casualties included civilians.

08/29/13 DoD: Army Casualty Indetified 1st Lt. Jason Togi, 24, of Pago Pago, American Samoa, died Aug. 26, in Hasan Karez, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

08/29/13 AFP: Taliban ambush kills 15 police in Afghanistan Taliban insurgents have killed 15 police on a key highway in western Afghanistan, officials said Thursday, the latest in a growing number of rebel attacks as NATO-led troops withdraw. “Highway One” is Afghanistan’s main national road, connecting the cities of Kabul, Kandahar, Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif, but it has been a constant target of insurgent attacks, kidnappings and looting.

08/28/13 VOA: Afghan Insurgent Attacks Kill at Least 18, including a U.S. soldier Insurgent attacks across Afghanistan killed at least 18 people Wednesday, including a U.S. soldier, four police and three civilians who died in an attack on a joint NATO-Afghan military base. Authorities say at least 10 Polish soldiers were wounded in the attack in the eastern province of Ghazni, when about 10 insurgents tried to storm the base after detonating a car bomb at the gate.
