08/25/13 KP: 5 Afghan soldiers killed, 13 injured in military operations According to Afghan defense officials, at last 5 Afghan national army soldiers were killed and 13 others were injured during military operations across the country. The Ministry of Defense following a statement said the Afghan national army soldiers were killed or injured in militants direct attack and roadside bomb blasts.

08/25/13 PressTV: Italy to keep military presence in Afghanistan beyond 2014 Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta says Italy will continue to be militarily present in Afghanistan even after 2014, when foreign forces are due to leave the country. Speaking in a joint press conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul on Sunday, Letta said that he would hold talks with Karzai about the presence of Italian troops beyond 2014 within the multilateral framework.

Jonathon Michael Dean Hostetter, 20, of Humphreys, Mo...died Aug. 23 in Haft Asiab, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device during combat operations. Both soldiers were assigned to 2nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

08/24/13 AP: Polish soldier killed in action in Afghanistan Poland's Defense Ministry says one of its soldiers has died of wounds sustained in action while on a NATO mission in Afghanistan's Ghazni province. Warrant Officer Miroslaw Lucki was among three Polish soldiers injured Friday while assisting Afghan forces in taking control of a large amount of explosives and weapons used for terrorist attacks. They wounded were taken to the military hospital at the Polish base, but doctors could not save Lucki, who is the 42nd trooper that Poland lost in Afghanistan since starting the mission in 2007.

08/23/13 AP: Bales gets life sentence for Afghan massacre A military jury on Friday sentenced a U.S. soldier who massacred 16 Afghan civilians last year to life in prison without a chance of parole. Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 40, had pleaded guilty in June in a deal to avoid the death penalty. Bales did not recount specifics of the horrors in court when he testified Thursday or offer an explanation for the violence, but he described the killings as an "act of cowardice, behind a mask of fear, bullshit and bravado."
