09/06/12 DoD: Army Casualty Identified Pfc. Shane W. Cantu, 20, of Corunna, Mich., died Aug. 28, in Charkh, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he was hit by shrapnel. Cantu was assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy.

09/06/12 KM: NATO airstrike kill Al-Qaeda operative in eastern Afghanistan Afghan and coalition forces today confirmed the death of an al-Qaida operative following a precision airstrike in Watahpur district, Kunar province, Friday.

09/06/12 ToloNews: Two Potential Suicide Bombers Arrested in Parwan Two potential suicide attackers were arrested Wednesday night north of Kabul province in possession of two suicide vests, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement Thursday. Afghan National Police stopped the two men in north-eastern Parwan province at around 10:30PM in the main road Dosaraka on the way to Bagram district, the MOI said Thursday.

09/05/12 DoD: Marine Casualty Identified Lance Cpl. Alec R. Terwiske, 21, of Dubois, Ind., died Sept. 3 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. The Marine’s parent command was Inspector/Instructor Staff, 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, Fort Knox, Ky.

09/05/12 ABC: 2 U.S. Troops Die in Helicopter Crash in Afghanistan A NATO helicopter crashed today in Eastern Afghanistan, killing two U.S. troops, the third time in 10 days that a coalition helicopter has come down. The two Americans, who have not been named, were the only crew aboard the OH-58 Kiowa helicopter, according to a Defense Department official. The cause of the crash is under investigation and officials have not ruled out that the chopper was shot down.

09/05/12 Reuters: NATO leader urges Karzai to act on Afghan rogue killings NATO's head called Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday to express "deep concerns" about a surge in rogue attacks on foreign soldiers. Afghan servicemen have killed at least 45 troops from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) this year, up from 35 in the whole of 2011, increasing mistrust between foreign soldiers and Afghan forces they are training.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's office made the announcement following talks with some of Afghanistan's most senior justice, defence and intelligence officials.

09/05/12 AFP: 2 NATO killed in Afghan helicopter crash A NATO helicopter came down in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing two NATO personnel, the military said. Taliban insurgents claimed to have shot down the helicopter in Logar province, just south of the capital Kabul, but NATO said the cause of the crash was under investigation.

09/04/12 radioaustralia: At least 25 killed in funeral bombing in Afghanistan A suicide bomber has killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens more at a funeral in eastern Afghanistan. Hundreds of people were attending the funeral of a tribal elder in the Nangarhar Province when the suicide bomber struck. Afghan officials say the target of the attack was the district governor of the province, Hamesha Gul. He was injured in the blast, while his son died.

The incident happened about 9:30AM local time in the capital of the province, Lashkar Gah, when a bomb that had been hidden in a motorbike exploded, a provincial police spokesman Farid Ahmad Farhang said.

09/04/12 Bernama: 27 Taliban Insurgents Killed In Afghanistan In Last 24 Hours Afghan police and army backed by NATO-led coalition forces have eliminated 27 armed Taliban insurgents during operations within the last 24 hours. "Six armed Taliban insurgents were also held and another was injured in 20 cleanup operations launched in Kunduz, Kandahar, Zabul, Logar, Ghazni, Khost, Paktika, Paktia, Farah and Helmand provinces in the last 24 hours," the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
