Are illegal aliens taking jobs from Americans? Yes & No. If US companies paid the prevailing wages needed to sustain a "quality of life" standard, then we would have Americans DEMANDING those jobs. The corporate greed to save money has taken the US job market to other countries. Here is the best example, the worker at a Reynosa or Matamoros maquiladora gets paid $55 a week for six days of work. The maquiladora on the US side pays the minimum wage plus mandated benefits and the difference over a weeks wage is over $350 for the same work.
When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the US, there wasn't a bunch of people willing to jump up on those dangerous roofs to repair them. As a matter of fact, there was an exploitation of the labor force by the owners of the roofing companies that made huge profits from the demise of people. For examples, I know first hand, the laborers were paid from $55 to $65 a square to remove and replace the roof shingles. The owners of the roofing companies were being paid by home owners and insurance companies the amount of $170 to $200 a square for the contract. The owners did not care if you carried worker's comp and other insurances.
So yes Virginia, we will continue hiring "Illegal Aliens" for jobs that corporations want a cheap labor pool. And since many Americans are out of jobs, we will go to any extreme including using the police to enforce and adapt laws to harass day laborers.
